Avoriaz is a place steeped in history and authenticity in the heart of the majestic mountains of the French Alps. Nestled in the Haute-Savoie valley, this world-renowned ski resort has captured the hearts of winter sports enthusiasts and nature lovers since its creation.
The history of Avoriaz begins in the 1960s, when the visionary Jean Vuarnet, Olympic downhill skiing champion in 1960, decided to create a revolutionary ski resort. In collaboration with the architect Jacques Labro, they imagine a unique place which would blend harmoniously into the mountainous landscape and which would stand out for its design by being entirely pedestrian. This station with an innovative concept, "urban skiing", where the slopes extend through snow-covered streets to reach homes and shops, is emerging from a titanic construction site.
Thus, in 1966, the resort of Avoriaz opened its doors to the first holidaymakers with its audacious and innovative architecture. Avoriaz will acquire its notoriety thanks to the fantastic film festival, which will become, after Cannes, the 2nd meeting of the cinema in France. The event will last from 1973 to 1993 and will welcome a large number of stars and directors.
Today, Avoriaz leads the way in skiing through the Portes du Soleil, one of the largest ski areas with 600 km of slopes and 12 linked resorts over the Franco-Swiss border and is also a natural extension of Morzine complementing each other wonderfully.
