The origins of Montriond

The history of Montriond goes back several centuries, and the village has preserved a rich historical heritage that bears witness to its mountain past and Savoyard heritage. Over the centuries, the village has developed around its lake - Lac de Montriond or Lac Vert - which was created by a natural collapse of part of the Nantaux mountain, creating a natural dam on the torrent and thus forming a lake. This geological catastrophe gave rise to one of the most picturesque lakes in the region, nestling at the foot of immense cliffs. Historians, however, have struggled to put a date on the landslide. The Municipality of Montriond subsequently had to carry out work to make the site safe, and it has since become a real must-see tourist attraction in the Geopark Chablais if you come to Haute-Savoie. The church in Montriond is another testimony to the history of this commune in eastern France. This religious monument was built in Baroque style in the 16th century. It dates back to 1535, when a chapel dedicated to Notre-Dame de Grâce, Saint Barbe, Saint Roche and Sainte Anastasie was built. This chapel was eventually enlarged and became a church. A number of building works modified the structure of Montriond church, including the inauguration of the bell tower in 1802. Montriond's bell tower has 4 bells, which today can be heard ringing at funerals. Tradition in Savoie dictates that the bells should only be rung at funerals. If you're passing through Montriond, you may be able to hear the bells being rung.
