The Origins of Les Gets

The mountain village Les Gets is situated at an altitude ranging from 940 m at the Pont des Gets to 1,848 m at Mont-Chéry. The town center itself sits at an elevation of 1,172 meters.

Before the 10th century, the area was almost uninhabited, with people from the neighboring valley visiting regularly to gather wood. This activity led to the origin of the name "Gets", which appears in historical records under various forms such as "gietos", "giettorum", or "giets". These terms refer to passages or corridors used for sliding felled trees. The main resources for the inhabitants of Les Gets, before the rise of tourism and winter sports, were pastures, wood, and water. Fir and spruce trees were especially used for building houses, from the framework to the chimney, including the walls and wooden tiles or roof shingles. Wood was thus extensively used in all types of construction.

Starting in the 1930s, skiing made its debut on the snowy slopes of Les Gets. In fact, the first ski lift was installed in 1936. Later, in the 1970s, Les Gets joined the “Stations-Village Savoie” association, a label that highlights the harmonious development of the village and the international Portes du Soleil association, which includes 12 ski resorts in both France and Switzerland, offering over 650 km of slopess.
